Data Migration - Case Studies in Reality

Karl Beatty

IT Program Director
Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding

In our environment we employ a process we developed to use ENOVIA LCA as a work-in-process design data manager and at certain design milestones releasing design info to Teamcenter.  It may seem that this exchange should be basic functionality of PDM systems, but it is not.  There are ideosyncracies in the software and setup that must be addressed to facilitate this information exchange.  The hand-off of data from one system to the other is the basis for collaboration, design reviews, and ultimately the delivery of configuration managed design deliverables to the end customer.  The multi-step process relies on home-grown utilities, customized COTS applications, and people at various steps in the process.

Speaker bio:

Karl Beatty began his career as a Drafting Apprentice at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi. After five years on the drafting board, he transitioned to the 3D CAD department working on the CALMA/Dimension III system. During the course of 10 years in 3D CAD, Karl worked in the Naval Architecture organization focusing on the development of production processes and enhancement of 3D CAD, Drawing and Manufacturing Aids extraction, Concurrent Engineering, and Multi-CAD Digital Data Transfer for Hull Foundations, Hull Structure, and Outfitting design disciplines. In 1998, he began working with a cross-functional team assessing the capabilities of CATIA V4 (Computer Aided Three-dimensional Interactive Application from Dassault Systemes) to support next-generation shipbuilding design system requirements at Ingalls Shipbuilding and functioned as the technical lead for Hull Foundations, Drawing Extraction, and V4-V5 Interoperability product enhancements.
Karl earned a BS in Computer Science in 1998, graduating with Highest Honors from the University of Southern Mississippi and transferred from Northrop Grumman Ship Systems (previously Ingalls Shipbuilding) to Northrop Grumman Information Technology as a Lead CAD/CAM Software Engineer in 2000. In 2002, he was assigned to Northrop Grumman Information Technology Solutions, Engineering Solutions organization as the Project Manager for the DD(X) CATIA/ENOVIA project. As the Project Manager he was responsible for the development, deployment, and implementation of CATIA V5 and ENOVIA LCA (LifeCycle Application) at Northrop Grumman Ship Systems. Karl is currently serving as the Information Technology Program Director responsible for Engineering, Integrated Logistics Systems, and Surface Combatant Programs at Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding - Gulf Coast Operations.
