Delivery of Model Based Definition (MBD) to Downstream Users

Christopher J Senesac

Senior Systems Architect Engineering(br/> Deputy Lean Engineering
The Boeing Company

Historically product data has been delivered to Boeing Rotorcraft’s downstream users in the form of 2D drawings. With the transition to a Product Data Manager and Model Based Definition (MBD) there is no 2D detail drawings created. Our vision is to eliminate paper drawings while reducing the cost of delivery to our customers. With MBD, all Product and Manufacturing Information (PMI) is annotated directly on the 3D model. The recipients of our technical data require the MBD model, consisting of a part or assembly, in a neutral format that does not require the original CAD authoring software and viewable with a low cost tool. Using Adobe’s PRC format we are able to deliver requirements in a single file. Rotorcrafts project plan, development, architecture, tools and implementation will be discussed.
